Preparing seedbed

Kentucky bluegrass field
21 days after seeding

Problem:
10.5-acre site located in floodplain, previously used for intramural soccer fields, had many undulations, uneven grade, and high population of native bentgrass.
Goal:
Develop three regulation-size soccer fields with additional practice areas and ability to shift goals.
Solution:
Because existing soil was silty loam with excellent drainage and heavy earthworm activity, a key objective was limiting the disturbance in order to protect the site's drainage. First, glyphosphate was applied to kill existing vegetation, which was then tilled under. Championship Turf Services then used wide-track bulldozers to establish the new grade, and laser leveled the field to finish grade. We then sodded one field to be ready by Fall, and seeded 8.5 acres with a mixture of four improved varieties of Kentucky bluegrass.

Improving vertical drainage prior to placement of rootzone

Laser grading playing surface

Problem:
Soccer field was persistently wet because of poor vertical drainage and water bleeding onto the field from adjacent slopes. Challenge was to make a functional native soil field, while ensuring adequate drainage.
Solution:
Glyphosphate was first applied to kill existing vegetation, which was plowed under. Championship Turf Services then stripped the topsoil and screened it to one-half inch. French drains were installed at the toe of the slope, and finger drains into the slope, to catch water coming off the hill. The subgrade was then graded to mirror the finish grade, and para-plowed to create vertical drainage. Stones were raked off with landscape tractors and small bulldozers. Championship Turf Services then placed topsoil to finish grade with widetrack dozers (vehicles with rubber tires were prohibited to avoid compaction). We then laser leveled the field to finish grade and installed sod.
